Landscape use by fishers (<i>Pekania pennanti</i>): core areas differ in habitat than the entire home range

چکیده

Home ranges have long been studied in animal ecology. Core areas may be used at a greater proportion than the rest of home range, implying core contains dependable resources. The Pacific fisher (Pekania pennanti (Erxleben, 1777)) is rare mesocarnivore occupying small area Sierra Nevada Mountains, California, USA. Once statewide, fishers declined 1900s due to trapping, habitat fragmentation, and development. Recently, drought induced by climate change affecting this population. We examined space use their versus range for levels anthropogenic modifications (housing density, road silvicultural treatments), types, tree mortality. found contained more late-successional forest minimal human activity compared with territory. Seasonal home range dynamics and sex differences in habitat use in a threatened, coastal marsh bird

A comprehensive understanding of spatiotemporal ecology is needed to develop conservation strategies for declining species. The king rail (Rallus elegans) is a secretive marsh bird whose range historically extended across the eastern United States. Inland migratory populations have been greatly reduced with most remaining populations inhabiting the coastal margins. Our objectives were to determ...

Habitat use and home range of the endangered gold-spotted pond frog (Rana chosenica).

Because of their complex life styles, amphibians and reptiles living in wetlands require both aquatic and terrestrial buffer zones in their protected conservation areas. Due to steep declines in wild populations, the gold-spotted pond frog (Rana chosenica) is listed as vulnerable by the IUCN. However, lack of data about its movements and use of habitat prevents effective conservation planning. ...

Home range and habitat use of feral hogs in Congaree National Park, South Carolina

Feral hogs (Sus scrofa) are a widespread exotic species that currently occur in most states within the United States and are common throughout the southeastern United States. We radio-collared and tracked feral hogs from April 2005 to November 2006 in Congaree National Park (CNP), South Carolina, USA. The CNP is one of the largest and most intact tracts of old-growth, bottomland hardwood forest...

Home range and habitat use of Reeves’s Pheasant Syrmaticus reevesii in the protected areas created from forest farms in the Dabie Mountains, central China

Many recently designated or expanded nature reserves in China were forest farms that ceased operations in the aftermath of the catastrophic Yangtze River floods of 1998. Although the vegetation in many of these areas has been altered significantly during forestry operations, there is now an opportunity to reduce, or even reverse, habitat loss for wildlife species that inhabit these forests. One...
